For any new business one of the main goals is to create brand awareness. Business owners get stuck trying to figure out the many ways they can get their product and/or service out there. While advertising is a great route to take it is not the only way to market anymore. With little or no budget to spend on advertising, SEO (Search Engine Optimization) presents an amazing solution by offering you a chance to get your brand name out to your audience. The best part? It’s free!
Search Engine Optimization is the tactic of improving your website content to better rank in search engines like Google. This allows people searching online for a product or service like yours to be immediately served your website. Here are some SEO tips to help your website rank in search engines, and for your brand awareness to grow.
Google Adwords and Search Console Is Your Friend
Both tools are free to use and offered as a part of the Google Marketing Platform. Take advantage of Google Adwords’ Keyword Planner tool. This tool allows you to do keyword research by searching for keywords that are relevant to your website content that have high search volumes. On the other hand, Google Search Console gives you the benefit of being able to submit your site directly to Google to be indexed for search. It also allows you to pinpoint the keywords and searches that are bringing traffic to your site, how your site is ranking within Google, and to manage how your site appears in Google. If you’ve never used these tools before Google offers a variety of free tutorials and certifications to build your proficiency.
Establish Yourself As A Thought Leader
This tactic has two great benefits for your business, it further establishes you as a thought leader within your given industry, and also allows you to build credibility with Google. Research reputable and popular industry blogs that accept guest bloggers, pitch a blog post on a relevant topic to be written by you and placed on their site. Be sure to research the blog and ensure you aren’t pitching topics that have already been discussed. Being featured as an author on other reputable websites gives you the opportunity to get a byline that links back to your website. This back-link allows you to build increased page authority which is Google’s way of giving your website credibility.
There’s A Plug-in For That!
We don’t expect you to become a seasoned SEO expert overnight, and that’s okay! There’s a plug-in that can do it for you. YOAST SEO is one of the most popular SEO plug-ins currently on the market. Using a traffic light measuring system, this tool gives you descriptive prompts to help you improve the content of your website. The best thing is, the free version of this plug-in does a pretty good job of assisting you with your SEO, however, if you’re looking for more functionality it’s definitely worth it to upgrade to the premium version.
Avoid Blackhat Practices
There are many articles and videos floating around the internet promising to help you beat the system. While this may seem like an appealing option, many of these practices are against the rules and regulations of search engines and can put you in hot water. Search engines like Google run constant updates to their algorithms to identify any such tactics. To put it into perspective, there are 365 days in a year and Google is reported to update its algorithm 500 – 600 times a year. If penalized for violating terms of service you risk your website experiencing a massive decrease in rank, or worst yet being banned completely by the search engine. So it’s always in your best interest to do things the right way where SEO is concerned.
